About the SPHAR Team
Operating under the umbrella of MoEP, the Space Medicine and Pharmacy Team is a research team established to conduct space Pharmacy, drug stability in space, drug production and various health research.
SPHAR’s Mission
The mission of the SPHAR team is to examine the important changes caused by the space environment in the human body, to develop measures for these, to examine the physical and chemical changes and effectiveness of drugs in the space environment, and to develop space-resistant drugs.
SPHAR’s Research Areas
The team is focusing on the following questions;
- Producing pharmacological measures to address significant changes in the human body caused by microgravity and radiation,
- Developing systems for on-site (in spacecraft) production of biopharmaceuticals and small molecules,
- Ensuring the quality and safety of drugs when produced remotely,
- Developing space – resistant drug formulations,
- Investigating changes in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics depending on alterations in nutrition and fluid distribution, muscle and bone mass, gastrointestinal microbiome, enzymes, and immune system regulation caused by microgravity and radiation.
Importance of SPHAR
SPHAR’s work is crucial to improving our knowledge and understanding of the effects of space on medicines and humans. The team’s research could help develop ways to sustain human presence in space and advance our potential to use space as a base for science and exploration.
