World Penguin Day Event: Breaking the Ice-2

As MoEP strives to ensure that Mars becomes humankind’s second home, we have prepared a social responsibility event for April 25th World Penguin Day, in the spirit of protecting our planet and our love for it.

Background of the Event Story

If you have landed on this page first and have not read our previous article, we would like you to first read our fictional story by clicking here. Although this is a story, the teams and people mentioned in the story are real-life MoEP teams and crew names, and their missions are their future professions. Our science and research teams in the story are listed below. You can find the list of our other teams by clicking here.

Teams: Marine Biology Team (MARBIT)Polar Astrobiological Research Vanguard Team (PARV), Satellite and Radio Astronomy Station Teams (HORIZON)Mars Space Station Team (HAN), Space Weather Research Team (SOLARIS), Artificial Intelligence Development Team (NEURON).

To reinforce our virtual and real-world love in the story, (1) penguin will be adopted by the teams in the story, just as we have already adopted (1) Mediterranean Monk Seal by MoEP and (2) Afalina Dolphin by our K12 Student Space Initiative Team (K12T) and Marine Biology Team (MARBIT) teams.

QO-100 Satellite Frequencies (Amateur Radio)

  • Date: April 25, 2025
  • KG-STV Frequency: 10489.625 MHz
  • HSmodem Frequency: 10489.615 MHz

Real-World Location in the Story

  • Antarctica, north coast.
  • Select the Google Map satellite imagery layer and use the mouse cursor wheel to zoom in and out to examine the coastline and breaks.

Rules and Event List

Since we do not want any child to be under the stress of competition, we have planned it as a memorial event and we have kept the participation possibilities wide, such as age limit, etc. We only ask you to pay attention to a few points. The topics in this event are listed below.

1. The deadline for submission of pictures is April 20, 2025, at 17.00.

2. There is no age limit and no age range, anyone is free to participate.

3. For drawing activities, always use a horizontal “A4” format paper and make sure that it is horizontal when taking/scanning pictures. You can use any paint material for coloring.

4. Only “name and surname” should be written in the bottom right corner of the pictures.

5. Please make sure that your e-mail address is correct on the submission form so that we can send you your e-certificate.

How will the pictures be sent and received?

moep amateur satellite stations

Your images will be sent via MoEP’s amateur satellite communication systems in Türkiye, Finland, and Germany to a satellite orbiting 36,000 km.

Amateur radio operators with amateur radio and satellite communications equipment can receive the pictures sent back to Earth from the satellite, while non-amateurs can use the WebSDR page that automatically stores the pictures from the satellite by clicking here. Or… maybe we have given a hint later in this article.

Firstly, Let’s Recall Our Story!

(*) The video is in Turkish, but you can watch it with English subtitles using the auto-translate options.

Activities

We wanted this activity, which was prepared to raise awareness and protect climate science and nature, to be fun at the same time.

In one activity you can draw a picture and send it, in another activity you can try to find the location of the glacier where the penguin is located by finding the coordinate hidden in the messages, or you can create a planetary heartbeat.

Let’s show the world how many and strong the planet’s protectors are and create a map of participants from the messages received. Feel free to participate in one or all of the following activities. Here we go!

Activity 1: “Draw a Picture, Be the Voice of the Planet”

Subject: Draw a picture of the moment when blue whales come to the rescue of Kar, who represents both hope and interspecies solidarity and in this story represents exactly the message we want to convey to the world.

Submit Your Picture Form Link

1. Draw the picture you imagine on the above topic, take a photo of the picture you have drawn, or scan it and send it to MoEP via the submission form link above.

2. MoEP will digitize your pictures and prepare them to send them to a real satellite via radio waves.

3. We will send each participant a “Take Action Before the Ice Breaks” certificate.

Activity 2: “Become a Planet Defender”

Submit Your Picture Form Link

1. Click here to download the file and learn the basics of “MoEP Basic Climate Science”,

2. Express what you have learned with a picture and send it to MoEP via the submission form link above,

3. If you wish, click here to create a “Moepian Eco-Friendly Life Diary” and see your score,

4. We will send each participant your “MoEP Planet Guardian” digital certificate and climate science pdf note to your e-mail address.

Activity 3: On which piece of glacier is Kar the Penguin?

Submit Your Picture

1. Shall we add a little excitement? Within the scope of the activity, we will send the pictures drawn by the children to the satellite in order, we will also send some numbers of the coordinates between the illustrations so that you can find the location of the glacier where the Penguin, Kar, is drifting.

2. In total, 4 numbers will be sent. When you receive them in the order they are sent, you will get a coordinate. For example “-76.05612, 9.26168”. If you are not a ham radio operator, you have the opportunity to follow directly from the satellite, and if you could not find it on the WebSDR page, maybe a Moepian may have placed these 4 coordinate numbers in the lower left corner of the video above for you, but you did not hear it from us 🙂

3. Search for this coordinate by clicking here and typing it in the “Search Google Maps” section at the top left of the page that opens and pressing the “Enter” key. (First switch to satellite view mode on the map screen.)

4. Take a screenshot or a photo of the glacier visible at the location and send it to us.

5. We will send your colorful “MoEP Protector of the Poles” digital certificate to your e-mail address.

Event 4: “Planet Heartbeat”

Send Your Heartbeat Message

Send your messages of hope, courage, and good wishes from the form here, and let’s create a planet heartbeat together. When you press the send message button, you will hear a tone. You will then hear different tones when your message is approved and published or when you click on other messages. Messages can be viewed after they have been approved.

“Protect the Ice with your Love!”

You will not need to do anything additional in the framework of the event. An interactive map will be created on the MoEP website, a heart icon will be placed in the country or province of the participants who sent us a picture in steps 1 and 2, and (1) a real penguin, which we will name “Kar”, will be adopted for you.

Wondering

Hey! Do you need help? Don’t understand something? No problem. You can write to us directly by clicking here. Let’s save our planet and our penguin together!
