About the ARK team

ARK was established with the aim of developing the theme of “Archeology from Space,” a relatively new field, to provide useful tools for future Mars research and, in parallel, to understand the origins of life and to host multidisciplinary studies in archaeology, fundamentally linked to astrobiology research.

ARK’s Mission

The science of archaeoastronomy has formed a broad and new multidisciplinary field by combining various disciplines such as archaeology, astronomy, geology, anthropology, geography, and the history of science.

Archaeoastronomy studies on Earth encompass various subjects, from cave paintings to special architectural structures, affecting humanity.

However, especially for Mars, research focused on geology, settlement, and astrobiology is also planned.

ARK, inspired by the use of devices such as Lidar in space studies and the application of satellite technologies in archaeological research under the theme of “Archeology from Space,” aims to adapt these technologies for use in future Mars colonies and surface research, with goals of understanding Mars’ climate and geology.

It also tracks current developments in this field and is responsible for promoting the introduction of this field, drawing inspiration from multidisciplinary research projects that bring together archaeology and space studies, such as the SQUARE project (NASA).

The examination and preservation of all areas associated with human presence in space, including space debris, space vehicles, and areas where humans have set foot, constitute the cultural heritage of space.

These efforts aim to underscore the significance of space for humanity and to transmit this importance to future generations.

Additionally, ARK develops proposals for multidisciplinary work in this area by emphasizing the fundamental importance of archaeology in understanding the origins of life and astrobiology research.

ARK’s Research Areas

  • Past archaeological projects related to space research,
  • Evaluation of the current state of archaeology from space,
  • Space Archaeology in future Mars colonies,
  • Archaeology and the origin of life,
  • Space Cultural Heritage Resource Management.

Importance of ARK

ARK aims to introduce and promote a highly new and promising field where archaeology intersects with astrobiology and space sciences, by providing different perspectives and encouraging the implementation of projects or the submission of project proposals.
