About the S-BIO

The S-Bioscience Research Team (S-BIO) is an international group of scientists and engineers working to research and understand the microbiome, which is critical for human settlement on Mars.

By conducting research in simulated Mars environments like MoEP – Analog Mars Research Stations (M-AMAS), the S-BIO team is investigating how the human microbiome will adapt to the living conditions on Mars and how the microbiome can be used for sustainable human settlement on Mars.

S-BIO’s Mission

  • To characterize the diversity and function of the microbiome on Mars,
  • To study how the human microbiome changes and adapts in a Mars simulation,
  • To determine the effect of the microbiome of Mars soil and atmosphere on human health,
  • To develop beneficial microorganisms to support food production and wastewater treatment on Mars,
  • To use the microbiome to improve soil fertility and plant growth on Mars,
  • To develop strategies to create a suitable microbiome for human settlement on Mars.

S-BIO’s Research Areas

Plant Phytopathology

s bio bitki fitopatolojisi

Plant pathology and space research are two fields of critical importance for humanity’s survival and development in space. By establishing a connection between these fields, it will be possible to develop more effective methods to combat plant diseases and maintain agricultural production in space.

Farming on other planets, such as Mars, requires the development of crops resistant to plant diseases. In the space environment, plants will face new challenges such as extreme temperatures, radiation, and limited resources.

Bioinformatics Research

s bio biyoinformatik

The Bioinformatics Research is a subgroup that develops innovative solutions and conducts research in the field of bioinformatics. Working on the analysis of genomic data, biological data mining, and computational biology, the team aims to contribute to scientific discoveries by bringing interdisciplinary approaches to biological problems.

Utilizing modern bioinformatics tools, they carry out forward-looking projects in various fields such as space, health, agriculture, and environmental sciences. We believe in the power of knowledge and invite you to join us in exploring the depths of biological data.

S-BIO’s Other Research Areas

  • Characterization of the Mars Microbiome: The S-BIO team uses various techniques such as molecular biology, microbiology, and microscopy to identify and characterize the microorganisms found in Mars soil, rocks, and atmosphere,
  • Bioinformatics in Microbiome Research: Leveraging advanced bioinformatics tools, it analyzes genetic data to map microbial communities and their functions, facilitating deeper insights into their roles and interactions within Martian habitats,
  • Human Microbiome Adaptation to Mars: The S-BIO team is tracking the microbiota profiles of people living in M-AMAS over time and examining the effect of these changes on human health,
  • Impact of the Mars Microbiome on Human Health: The S-BIO team is conducting research to determine whether the microorganisms in Mars soil and atmosphere pose a risk to human health.

Importance of S-BIO

S-BIO‘s research is critical for human settlement on Mars. This research will help us understand how the human microbiome will adapt to the living conditions on Mars and how the microbiome can be used for sustainable human settlement on Mars.
