As Mars on Earth Project (MoEP), we organized a versatile special day event to both allow our children, who are the guarantee of our future, to experience the joy of “April 23rd National Sovereignty and Children’s Day” and to raise their awareness of nature and the environment on the occasion of “April 25th World Penguin Day“.
Within the scope of our activities, our children designed “Mars Flags” while also stepping into the mysterious world of Morse code. In our special “Penguin Day” section, we reinforced their environmental sensitivity with various activities such as recycling workshops, informative presentations on climate change, and nature-themed painting activities.
Our children shared the pictures they drew, the Morse codes they deciphered, and other activities with us. We sent these works to the QO-100 satellite, located 36,000 km in orbit, through our amateur satellite communication stations in Germany and Finland.
While some of the signals traveled through space, the satellite sent the received pictures back to Earth, and amateur radio operators following the satellite in a region spanning from India to Germany and France received the children’s pictures and sent them back to us. We also sent them a certificate of appreciation for their support.
We have been using the QO-100 satellite for a long time to ignite children’s excitement for space, and local and foreign amateurs working on satellite communication have also adapted to these studies through our mediation.
In this special project, which we carried out to stimulate our children’s imagination and curiosity, their beautiful drawings and the Morse codes they deciphered were sent to the QO-100 communication satellite, approximately 36,000 kilometers away from Earth. In this way, the works produced by tiny hands embarked on a space journey.
As part of this exciting experience, the signals returning from the satellite successfully reached amateur radio operators in a wide geography from India to Germany, and were delivered to us. This international collaboration was an unforgettable experience that broadened our children’s horizons.

Another important participation came from our amateur radio operators at the Neumayer-III German research station in Antarctica. Although the location of these operators is normally on the very edge of the satellite’s coverage area, they successfully received a few pictures and shared them with us.
Furthermore, to reciprocate the children’s love for climate, the poles, and penguins, they printed out our event picture despite the freezing cold, laminated it with PVC, and posed in front of the penguins.
Children’s Messages: The Voice of the Planet
- The poles are a part of the Earth; if the poles disappear today, other regions of the Earth may disappear tomorrow. Let’s do everything we can to prevent global warming. Karabük BİLSEM 78-1 School Station/Gökçe E.
- Everyone in the world is connected. The order in the world and in nature should never be disrupted.
- The poles are a part of the Earth; if the poles disappear today, other regions of the Earth will disappear tomorrow. Please prevent global warming, participate in social responsibility projects.
- Sweet penguin, even if you get lost, everyone will be by your side. Karabük BİLSEM 78-1 School Station/Seçil.
- Attention, attention! Let our world not perish, let’s not move to Mars, let’s stay on our planet.
- The world in our hands is slipping, let’s not have to catch it later. Karabük BİLSEM 78-1 School Station/Ali.
- Attention! Glaciers may break! Our world needs us. Karabük BİLSEM 78-1 School Station/Arda.
- I hear the voice of “Lonely Pole,” don’t lose hope! You won’t get lost.
- Think and imagine something that will never happen! Then when it becomes real, you’ll wonder how it happened. Courage begins first with dreaming and then with sincerely wanting.
- Everything in nature is brotherly, as long as we don’t disrupt this order.
- We did not inherit this world from our ancestors, but borrowed it from our grandchildren. Let’s protect this trust well so that our children’s children can also live in this beautiful world and see these cute penguins.
- Let’s start working today for a cleaner tomorrow, so that future generations can also see penguins!
- We will have a cleaner and healthier world. Let’s take action now.
- Don’t touch my penguin!
- Our hope for the future will never be lost, and you, world, are with us.
Children’s Mars Flag Design Messages
- Strawberry-Watermelon Colony. This colony consists of stick figures. It is a very peaceful colony. This colony only eats strawberries and watermelons. This colony values science a lot. They also take very good care of their children. They are also very kind. Karabük BİLSEM 78-1 Station/Mina Belis Şeker.
- The people standing side by side on the flag represent love, unity, solidarity, and respect. The dots on the flag represent the colony’s love for music. Karabük BİLSEM 78-1 Station/İpek Mina Aşağıçayır.
- This cabin has bases in space, on Mars, and on Earth. They are aware of the aliens on Mars and study them every day. To conduct more detailed research, they take the aliens to Earth and conduct studies. They are trying to find out why the aliens came to Mars. Actually, the aliens come there from the Alien Planet and want to make Mars their own planet too. Karabük BİLSEM 78-1 Station/Feyza Hilal Ergin.
- The name of this colony is Mars in a Basket. On the flag of this colony, we see Mars in a basket, and there are space-related decorations on the sides of the basket. Mostly, the color of the decorations resembles galaxy colors. The inhabitants of this colony put stones from Mars in these baskets and make decorations with them. Karabük BİLSEM 78-1 Station/Fatih Üzel.
- Hello! Today I will tell you about my colony. The Turkish name of my colony is “Dünya Mars Kolonisi” (Earth Mars Colony). But it is written as “Earth-Mars Colony”. My colony is in a mountainous area with fertile agricultural land. The potatoes of this colony are famous. But they call them “pattis” there. Everything is made from pattis. My flag tells the brotherhood of Earth and Mars, and this place has a different language. Karabük BİLSEM 78-1 Station/Furkan Ergel.
- Hello friends. Today I will tell you about my colony. Turkey’s friendship experiment with aliens has come true. The union of 2 beings was very beautiful, and my colony is full of respect, compassion, and mercy. We will be waiting for you one day. Goodbye. Karabük BİLSEM 78-1 Station/Umut Karadağ.
- The people in my colony would be tolerant, respectful, and loving. The people in my colony would be side by side and in unity, like meatballs in bread. This is the meaning of my colony’s flag. Bread means unity that protects people, the people in between are on Mars, and ketchup means the love that stands above us. Karabük BİLSEM 78-1 Station/Gökçe Yıldız.

Acknowledgement
We would like to express our sincere thanks to all our teammates who put great effort into the realization of this meaningful event, working devotedly in the text writing, translation, voice-over, and visual material preparation processes.
We are also grateful to our valuable participants who supported us from different cities and even countries, and to the precious amateur radio operators who captured our children’s work from space and delivered it to us.
As MoEP, we believe that our children’s potential is limitless. We will continue to work with all our strength to unlock this potential by remembering them not only on special days but always, by including them in our projects, and by working together with them. Being a light in our children’s lives is our greatest source of motivation. See you at the next event…
