About the CHRONOS Team

CHRONOS is a specialized team operating within the Mars on Earth Project (MoEP), developing the IoT (Internet of Things) infrastructure and remote operation systems for the analog Mars research station. The team is responsible for the design, installation, and management of all sensor networks, data collection systems, and remote control mechanisms at the station.

CHRONOS Mission

CHRONOS’s primary mission is to create a comprehensive IoT ecosystem in the analog Mars station that can simulate real Mars missions. This ecosystem enables real-time monitoring and control of all critical components in the station, from life support systems to scientific research equipment.

The team aims to prepare for future space missions by developing prototypes of technologies that could be used in actual habitats on Mars.

CHRONOS’s Working Principles

  • Continuous Monitoring: 24/7 monitoring and data collection of all systems at the station,
  • Reliability: Redundancy and fault tolerance for critical systems,
  • Automation: Automation of routine tasks and AI-supported decision-making mechanisms,
  • Energy Efficiency: Low-power sensor networks and intelligent energy management,
  • Modularity: Easily expandable and updatable system architecture,
  • Data Security: Encryption of all communication and cybersecurity measures.

CHRONOS Research Areas

Sensor Networks and Data Collection

  • Monitoring environmental parameters (temperature, humidity, pressure, radiation, etc.),
  • Status of life support systems,
  • Monitoring energy production and consumption,
  • Resource usage and inventory management.

Remote Control Systems

  • Remote management of habitat systems,
  • Emergency response protocols,
  • Control of robotic systems,
  • Communication latency simulation.

Data Analysis and Visualization

  • Real-time data processing,
  • Trend analysis and forecasting,
  • 3D habitat visualization,
  • Tracking performance metrics.

CHRONOS is at the forefront of developing habitat technologies essential for future Mars missions. The team’s systems provide crucial insights into the monitoring and management of potential Martian habitats.

Considering the significant communication latency (approximately 20 minutes), the ability of these habitats to operate autonomously and respond to remote commands is paramount.
