MoEP is excited to announce a call for designs for next-generation spacesuits for both analog and real space missions. We are particularly interested in collaboration with fashion designers to create spacesuits that are both functional and aesthetically groundbreaking.
Goals
- Design IVA (intravehicular activity) suits for use inside a spacecraft,
- Design EVA (extravehicular activity) suits for use outside a spacecraft or on the surface of a planet or Moon,
- Design station uniforms for special occasions,
- Design field mission suits for use in astrobiology, geology, and other field studies,
- Design K12 suits for use in K12 stations.
Design Requirements
- IVA suits:
- Must be pressurized and provide oxygen via an external life support system,
- Should prioritize comfort and functionality,
- Will be used for simulation, command and control, crewed flight, and unmanned vehicle command control cockpit tasks in the analog station.
- EVA suits:
- Must protect against the harsh environment of space,
- Should provide internal climate control and life support,
- Only the fabric and design aspects of the EVA suit, which includes electronic and biomedical sensor systems, will be modeled in this project,
- The backpack, helmet, climate control, communication, biomedical sensors, and other electronic equipment, as well as interface software for the analog astronaut to use with the suit, will be developed by MoEP teams.
- Station Uniforms:
- Should be worn by MoEP Analog Mars Research Station and remote base crews on special occasions,
- Should be design-focused to reflect team spirit and station identity,
- May include logos, name tags, mission patches, and accessories.
- Field Mission Suits (SGT):
- Will be used primarily for station-independent work in astrobiology, geology, and other field studies,
- May include logos, name tags, mission patches, and accessories.
- K12 Suits (K12T):
- Are work suits that will be used in K12 stations,
- May include logos, name tags, mission patches, and accessories.
